More women than men attend college today and that is in large part because mothers are returning to the classroom. But, in order to do this, there must be the money to do this. That's why I've written this article on financial aid for moms.

You see, I'm the single mother of a rambunctious 2 year old. But I'm also a student studying to be an Elementary School teacher. I couldn't have done it without financial aid for moms.

Low income and single parent households should first go to the government benefits site. You can find out how to pay for tuition and living expenses as well as child care.

To get any government benefits, you need to fill out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). This will get you access to Pell Grants, Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grants, Stafford Student Loans and the Federal Perkins Loan.

But don't let the name fool you, the FAFSA also opens the doors for financial aid from states and private sources as well. Most states offer grants based on academic qualifications, work history, and need.

Private scholarships are also available. Some depend on merit alone. Others look at your need. And others take into account both your need and your abilities.

You can go back to college. I know that raising a child, working part time (or even full time) and attending classes seems impossible, but it's not and I'm proof of that. Getting a degree can be extremely challenging if you have kids, but financial aid for moms makes it possible.
